BCIMA 2026: Bringing stronger benefits, pure and simple
Stronger cover, or cut-backs? Empty promises or benefits that deliver? While some South Africans are facing an unfortunate gamble with their medical aid, BCIMA is standing firm to ensure that no members fall through the cracks.
Times are tough, it’s true, but they are tough for everybody. That means, as a trusted medical scheme, our job is to reinforce the cover we provide because in these times, dependable healthcare becomes even more important, not less.
In fact, while many schemes experienced low or no growth this year, BCIMA’s membership grew by 8% in 2025, demonstrating that more people in the building, construction, civil engineering and open-cast mining sectors are choosing a scheme that prioritises real, practical protection over cost-cutting. We believe this is because we put our members first, time after time, and as you will see from this blog post, 2026 will be no different.
Real improvements make a real difference
Here are some of BCIMA’s benefit updates, making everyday value a reality in the year ahead:
- Acute medicine cover is increasing from 80% to 85%, offering better protection against unexpected illness and helping families manage their day-to-day medical costs more easily.
- Hospital benefit limits are increasing by 4%, providing members with stronger cover for serious health events.
- Chronic medicine limits are increasing by 4%, supporting long-term treatment for conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure and other chronic illnesses.
These changes offer meaningful support in real life and can mean the difference between stressing about how to afford antibiotics for a sick child and simply being able to collect the medication. It’s the peace of mind that comes from knowing your chronic treatment is covered month after month.
No hidden costs or unpleasant surprises
Many medical schemes still leave their members to deal with a string out-of-pocket costs. When living expenses are rising, those extra payments can quickly pile up.
BCIMA avoids this by keeping our cover straightforward and predictable – a kind of certainty that matters, especially for households where every rand counts. No one should have to choose between paying for treatment and covering basic expenses like rent or groceries.
A track record of protecting benefits
South Africa continues to face high unemployment — currently around 33.2% — which means many households depend on a single breadwinner, and that financial pressure is a daily worry. At the same time, medical inflation is currently 9.5%, almost three times the general inflation rate. In this difficult environment, BCIMA stands out for protecting crucial benefits for the entire family, year after year.
The scheme’s 11.9% contribution adjustment for 2026 is a necessary step to maintain financial stability, while also ensuring benefits continue to improve rather than shrink. Members and their families still enjoy comprehensive cover under a single contribution rate – a real help for hard-pressed families.
Over the past six years, BCIMA has kept contribution increases to an average of around 7.6% while safeguarding every benefit. During the same period, many other schemes reduced their cover or restricted their networks — and still lost members. BCIMA’s consistent protection of benefits shows a long-term commitment to its members’ health and financial security.
Supporting the men and women who build South Africa
BCIMA exists for the 1.2 million workers who keep South Africa’s building, construction, civil engineering and open-cast mining industries moving. These workers lay foundations, raise walls, build hospitals and schools, and help shape the country’s future. They deserve healthcare cover that is as solid and reliable as the structures they build.
Did you know that only 15% of South Africans are members of a medical scheme? BCIMA is proud to be steadily growing and making quality healthcare possible for more people year after year. Every new member represents a family with more security and fewer worries about healthcare costs.
BCIMA remains committed to building health security with the same dedication and strength that its members bring to their work every day. That commitment guides every improvement, every benefit upgrade, and every decision the scheme makes. That is the BCIMA difference – and our growing membership proves it works.
